Construction of Rising Main 108A

During the construction of this rising main which was undertaken for Moreton Bay Water with MWH Australia as the superintendant, was one that was not without many challenges and obstacles. Not the least was a one in fifty year rain event which caused Freshwater Creek to flood over the complete site.
This project involved the construction of approximately 1400 metres of 500mm DICL pipe including seven tunnel bores. Two of these bores were crossing the environmentally sensitive Freshwater Creek with the remainder of the project being undertaken by open trenching method parallel to the creek. Along with the pipe work there was also construction of 4 x air and 4 x section valves and associated structures.
The construction of this pipeline was undertaken through council parkland and ran along the rear of existing houses for the majority of the project. All of the site personnel were very mindful of the residents and this was made evident in the number of issues arising from construction. The issue of restoration was one that was undertaken with as much emphasis as the construction phase with some 12000m2 of turfing and 1500m2 of concrete path being laid as well as maintained.
The environmental requirements of this project were to ensure that no silt entered Freshwater Creek and that the water quality after pumping from the construction site was within the parameters set by the EPA. The treatment of the water was undertaken using an automatic in line dosing system and “siltbuster” treatment system supplied by
Australian Dewatering. The monitoring of the water was undertaken by CQA and daily testing carried out by the site personnel using specially purchased testing equipment. Regular inspections from the environmental consultant were also undertaken ensuring compliance with the environmental management plan.
This project could not have been completed on time and on budget without the assistance of our partners, including MWH Australia,
Australian Dewatering, Civil Quality Assurance and Bothar Boring.
